Apollinary Mikhailovich Vasnetsov was born in 1856 in the village of Riabovo, Vyatka province, Russia. He specialized in scenes from medieval history of Moscow and landscapes of Russian nature. Vasnetsov was a painter and a graphic artist. He did not receive a formal artistic education but studied under his older brother Viktor Vasnetsov, the famous Russian painter. From 1883 both brothers lived in Abramtsevo. Fell under the influence of Vasiliy Polenov. Traveled across Europe in 1898-99. Member of “The Wanderers” from 1899 and member of the Academy from 1900. He became one of the founders and supervisors of the Union of Russian Artists. Died in Moscow in 1933.
