Viacheslav Vasilievich Kalinin was born in Moscow in 1939. Born in Moscow in 1939. He graduated from Abramcevo Art College in 1962; began his career in 1962 and rapidly progressed to the leading position among Russian artists. His first exhibitions were held in the early 1960’s, but were often closed within hours of opening; participated in the Beekeeping Exhibit in 1975; became known abroad in 1967 (exhibition at Signo Gallery, Rome, Italy). In close contacts with non-conformist artists A.Zverev, D.Krasnopevtzev, I.Kabakov, V.Nemukhin, A.Slepyshev, E.Shteynberg and others organized the famous "Bulldozer Exhibition" in Bee-keeping Pavilion at VDNK. His art is informed by German Expressionism. His art creates its own mythology, with characters traveling from one painting to another, playing cards and attending carnivals. He spends his time between both Russia and the US. Belongs to the Nonconformist artists of 1960s-1980s.
