Aleksei Vasilievich Hanzen (Ganzen) was born in Odessa in 1876. Studied at Odessa Drawing School; at Imperial Academy of Arts until 1903; in Paris and Leipzig. Active in Odessa and St. Petersburg until 1904; mostly abroad, especially Germany during 1904-1912. Worked in Odessa in 1912-1914 and in Crimea in 1914; in Odessa in 1917-1919. Immigrated to Bulgaria around 1920, where he settled in Sofia. Began exhibiting in 1898. Member of TYuRKh from 1919. Exhibited with Imperial Academy of Arts; Society of Russian Watercolorists; St. Petersburg Society of Artists; Comradeship of Artists. Specialized in landscapes, often in watercolor; painted battle scenes during World War I. Died in Dubrovnik, Croatia in 1937. You can find more information about Hanzen at www.hanzen.ru
