Richard Rudolfovich VASMI  1929 — 1998

Ріхард ВАСЬМI • Рихард ВАСМИ

Rikhard Vasmi was born in Leningrad in 1929. He became orphan when his parents died of starvation during the war in 1942. From 1946 to 1950, he studied at the Leningrad School of Architecture and continued his education at the Leningrad Institute of Civil engineering, from which he dropped out and then went on to perform a series of politically undemanding, low-paying jobs. Rikhard Vasmi belonged to the Leningrad-based unofficial group, known as the Arefiev Circle. Vasmi depicted Leningrad cityscapes in a deliberately crude, primitive style. There works were inspired by the French Fauves and the German Expressionists. Vasmi was influenced by work of Nikolai Lapshin.
