Ernst Neizvestny was born in Sverdlovsk in 1926. After finishing secondary school volunteered to serve in the Soviet army. Was severely wounded at the Czechoslovak border and thought dead, but was saved and taken to a hospital in Bratislava and then Brno. After convalescence attended the Academy of Art in Riga and in 1954 graduated from the Surikov Art Institute in Moscow. Worked for a time as a founder in the Urals. Commenced making sculptures in the 1950s and came to prominence in the early 1960s. Emigrated in 1976 to Zurich, Switzerland. Now lives and works in New York.
