Dmitri Arkadevich Nalbandian was born in Tiflis, Georgia in 1906. Studied at Tiflis Academy of Arts in 1924-1929. Active in Moscow. Began exhibiting in 1935. Well known paintings include portraits of Stalin and Lenin. Became a Soviet academician in 1947. Awarded Stalin Prizes in 1946 and 1951; title ‘People’s Artist of the USSR’. Also an animated film maker for MezhRabPomFilm, Moscow, 1931-1934. One of the most notorious of Soviet court painters; the long-term glorifier of Lenin, Stalin and Brezhnev; also painted still-life and landscape paintings. Died in Moscow in 1993.
