Varvara STEPANOVA  1894 — 1958

Born in Kaunas, Lithuania in 1894. Studied at the Kazan Art School (1911) where she met Alexander Rodchenko, later her husband. Entered the Stroganov Art Institute, Moscow (1913). Member of Inkhuk (1920 to 1923) and of the Productivist group with Rodchenko, Popova and Tatlin; she stressed constructivist principles in design. Worked as a textile designer with Popova at the First State Textile Print Factory in Moscow (1924) and taught in the textile department of Vkhutemas (1924-1925). Died in 1958 in Moscow.
