Sergei Vasilievich Maliutin was born in Moscow in 1859. Studied at Moscow College of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in 1883-1886. Active in Moscow, where worked at M. Tenisheva’s estate, Talashkino, 1900-1903. Genre painter, book illustrator, theatre set and costume designer. Also known for his architectural designs. Maliutin, presumably designed and painted the first Matrioshka, a “nesting doll” in a folk crafts workshop in the "Abramtsevo" estate of a famous Russian industrialist and patron of arts Savva Mamontov. The artist died in Moscow in 1937.
