Alexander Yakovlevich Golovin was born in Moscow in 1863. Studied at the Moscow College of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in 1881-1889; in Paris in 1889, 1892. Active in Moscow until 1901; St. Petersburg thereafter. Member of the World of Art from 1902; Union of Russian Artists in 1903-1916. Exhibited with Itinerants in 1893, 1895; World of Art in 1899-1924. Became an Active Member of Academy of Arts in 1912. Best known as outstanding theatre artist; official Decorator of the Imperial Theatres in 1899-1917; worked with Sergei Dyagilev in Paris. Also a graphic artist. Died in Detskoe Selo, Leningrad in 1930.
