Mykola Antonovych Maxymenko was born in Yaropovychi village, Zhytomyr region, Ukraine in 1924. During 1938, after surviving the Great Ukrainian Famine the family moved to Magnitogorsk, Russia. In 1943 Maxymenko served in the Red Army and was severely wounded in a battle near Dnipro. He was released from the hospital in 1945. In 1946 he studied art in Magnitogorsk in the studio of G. Petkova and in 1948 in the studio of Solovyov. Moved to Rivne, Ukraine in 1948 and in 1965 to Zhytomyr. In 1976 became the head of Zhytomyr art studios. In 1974 Maxymenko was awarded a title of honorary artist of Ukraine. The artist traveled to Italy, Spain, France and Egypt in 2001. He lives and works in Zhytomyr.
